I saw her out of the corner of my eye. The service was over and she was waiting to speak with me. I was talking and praying with several members, but she waited patiently. I greeted her warmly only to hear these words… “You are not the man of God I thought you were.”
The woman, who had not been in our church long, preceded to tell me why she disagreed with how I was leading the church. “You’re not listening to Holy Spirit”, she said. Predictably, she soon left the church.
While I don’t necessarily agree with her assessment of my leadership, or my ear to the Holy Spirit’s voice, she was right about one thing. I do make mistakes. I have made mistakes in preaching, leading, counseling, staffing, managing my time, caring for my family, and much more.
I wish it weren’t true. I need grace. As a pastor I’ve learned to humble myself, say I’m sorry, and to ask for forgiveness.
Ssshhh….don’t tell anyone…pastors are people too.
A while back I wrote a post called “6 Mistakes I Have Made as a Pastor.” The post connected with pastors, and it’s still one of the most visited articles on this blog. Why? Because we all make mistakes.
John Maxwell in his great book, “Failing Forward”, wrote… “Embrace adversity and make failure a regular part of your life. If you're not failing, you're probably not really moving forward.”
I emailed over 2,000 pastors and asked pastors to share their mistakes and what they have learned. The response was amazing. I have reduced their responses to 50 common mistakes and listed them in 8 categories.
Here is what pastors told me…
As you can see, if you make mistakes, you are not alone! Not only can we learn from our own mistakes and shortcomings, it is prudent for us to listen to other pastors and learn from their experiences.
For me? I see several mistakes in this list I am currently making. I’m choosing one mistake to stop making and will begin to focus on improvement.
Question: What are your takeaways from this list? What can we learn? How can we grow? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Comment below...
