By now most of you have heard the news of the tragic suicide of Pastor Andrew Stoecklein in California. We pray for God's comfort and peace to be upon his dear family and congregation.
I started my blog and FB group in an effort to encourage pastors to be healthy. Not just healthy in body, but also in mind, emotion, and spirit. The untimely death of this pastor reminds us all of the importance of mental and emotional health, the difficulty of our task, and the reality of spiritual warfare.
For every pastor who is tired, burned-out, discouraged, empty, and struggling, you need to know thousands of us pastors understand. You are not alone.
We continue in our pastoral work because of a calling. It's a high calling, initiated by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. But it is a calling that comes at a cost. There is a price to pay. It's often tempting to give up, to quit, and to do something else, but we are reminded that our God is worthy of our sacrifice.
To every pastor struggling emotionally, please hear the words of a fellow laborer. Take care of yourself. Rest, exercise, eat well, go on vacation, find interests outside of the ministry, develop a hobby, and be intentional about building friendships outside of your church.
If you need help, be courageous and seek it out. Talk to a counselor, confide in a friend, get help with addictions, visit your doctor, and be honest with your spouse.
If you are seriously tempted to hurt yourself call 1-800-273-8255.
Know God and so many other people genuinely love you. Your life matters, your ministry is making a difference, and worldly standards do not define our success.
If I can ever help you in any way, please don't hesitate to reach out.
